Empire Avenue: the next big thing in social media. I’m serious.

Posted in Social Media by Megan Do on June 2, 2010

OK, so my friends at Brand Flakes For Breakfast posted something about a new website called Empire Avenue on Tuesday. Well, I do pretty much anything they tell me to, so I had to check it out.

Empire Avenue is an online influence virtual stock exchange where you can sell and buy shares of individuals and organizations based on their online influence. You can connect your blogs/RSS feed and Twitter and based on your activity, your share price changes.

The verdict: I’m obsessed. I started my account this morning and have been checking my share price and wealth every 30 minutes. This is seriously addicting and ridiculously fun.

If you think this is stupid, BFFB says it best:

“And if it seems silly to trade virtual people and sites in virtual currency, consider this: 14 months ago, you would have thought it silly that people would “check in” to the grocery store, and brag about becoming “Mayor” of their local gas station. That silly social network is gaining more than 15,000 new users a day. Ready to invest?”

Amen to that! All social media networks need to start somewhere. At one point, even Facebook and Twitter seemed like crazy ideas.

Currently, the website is still in its Beta version and is invite only. So add your name to the waiting list and enjoy!
